The latest webtoon to join the league of confirmed webtoon adaptations is “Vigilante”, created by CRG and Kim GyuSam. At the time of writing, it has recently been reported that actor Nam JooHyuk has been offered the leading role in the adaptation, and his agency, Management SOOP, shared that he is positively reviewing the same. If Nam JooHyuk accepts the casting offer, he will be playing the role of the eponymous vigilante Kim JiYong. Actors Yoo JiTae and Lee JunHyuk have been offered the main roles of Jo Heon and Jo KangOk respectively. In addition, “Vigilante” will also be getting a film adaptation, helmed by Studio N. Much like the title of the webtoon suggests, “Vigilante” tells the story of an avenger who takes the enactment of justice into his own hands after the law fails him. Our protagonist, Kim JiYong, is a model police university student who appears to have it all: good looks, social skills, brains, and brawn. Not only is he an ace in academics but also his extraordinary skills in judo, boxing, and wrestling render him an unrivaled fighter. However, he harbors deep resentment towards the judicial system, which continues to favour the powerful and punish the disadvantaged. To fill this gap in judgment, Kim JiYong turns to vigilantism, spurred on by the fire of the anger he holds within. When he was a child, Kim JiYong’s mother was brutally murdered by a gangster but the murderer received a sentence of a mere 3 years and 6 months owing to a number of spurious factors that legally undermined his liability. As he claimed to repent his actions, he was treated with leniency and let off with a slap on the wrist. 17 years later, JiYong tracks him down with half a mind to exact revenge. While he once struggled to come to terms with the possibility of his mother’s murderer having truly changed, the fact that he continues to be a delinquent strangely puts his mind to ease because now, he can fulfill the retribution that his mother was denied. It is this breed of justice that satisfies Kim JiYong the most. Having found his “calling”, JiYong leads a double life: top student by day from Monday to Thursday and vigilante by night on the weekends. His modus operandi is to pick his targets by two defined criteria: unfairly short sentences and continued criminal activity after being released, get information from the police station, strategize his plan of action and carry out his decree. In this way, Kim JiYong aims to make the law perfect, and as the general public catches up, they see a dark hero in the making. If Nam JooHyuk were to accept the role of Kim JiYong, it would be unlike anything we’ve seen from the actor before. Having proven himself as one of the most versatile actors in the Korean entertainment industry, there is no doubt that he would bring Kim JiYong to life in full colour, creating a vision to behold. The depth and emotional complexity with which Nam JooHyuk imbues his characters set him apart as an artist and speak volumes of his innate talent for storytelling through acting. Besides, it is undeniable that Kim JiYong’s visuals are a perfect match for Nam JooHyuk. Would you like to see Nam JooHyuk as Kim JiYong in “Vigilante”?
