LEESEOKHOON’s music has always drawn from the grand beauty of little things and “Customary Place” is no exception. The album plays like an ode to constancy, bringing a warm and familiar comfort to the listener. Kpopmap had the incredible opportunity of interviewing the musical genius and the conversation that followed highlighted just how personal and precious this album is to LEESEOKHOON. Stay tuned for our Video Q&A with LEESEOKHOON on Kpopmap’s YouTube Channel, coming on April 1, 2022 at 6PM KST! The title of your album is “Customary Place”. Can you tell us more about the album and why it was named “Customary Place”? It literally means “same place”. I have always been here without changing, and I have been doing music the way I always do. Come to think of it, my daily life has been like that for the past few years. I always practiced, sang or wrote songs. I think it’s a title that expresses my life so far. This is why I would like to introduce this album as the album, filled with LEESEOKHOON, that anyone can listen to comfortably at the same place, as always. LEESEOKHOON This is your first full-length solo album after 14 years since your debut. Which part did you pay attention to the most while producing the album? I want the people who have been listening to my music until now, to remember that I am the LEESEOKHOON, who they loved and supported until now. Ever since, I have made a lot of songs and released a lot of albums. All of that was me at this “same place”, and what I wish the most is for the people who listen to my songs to know that the me I am now and is also the me in “Customary Place”. LEESEOKHOON Which point of the album should listeners pay the most attention to? From the beginning to the end of the album, all the songs are connected with organic emotions through my voice. It is not grand, but the layout of the tracks have that flow as well. Each song delicately fills in parts of the narrative of the album, so I hope everyone listens fully to all the songs. One will be able to feel the all the stories and emotions contained in the songs by listening to the songs carefully, from beginning to the end. LEESEOKHOON Aside from the title song, is there a song in the album that you are particularly attached to, or a song you would like to recommend? The last track on this album called ‘Shelter’ is the song I am most attached to. ‘Shelter’ is a song made through and for my mother. For me, my mother is a presence that fills all of my daily life. It is to the extent that I always share the thought that my mother is by my side and she always protects me whenever I do or feel something. I hope that many people will feel the same emotions that I feel when they listen to this song. LEESEOKHOON You participated in composing/writing the songs ‘We’re Not Us’ and ‘Brave’. What inspired you when you were writing these songs? Actually, I made those two songs in the past, and it has been sleeping peacefully in my hard drive ever since. When I listen to these songs, I vaguely remember the emotions I wrote it with at that time. ‘We’re Not Us’ is a song that expresses the feelings I had once in a relationship, and ‘Brave’ was born because I wanted to make a song that can be sung like a poem. Every time I make a song, I create it with all the thoughts and feelings that I have in that moment, so when I hear the song later on, I think it’s special because the memories and feelings of that time bloom. LEESEOKHOON While writing the lyrics, was there a verse you particularly liked? Something like a line that makes you think “I am the writer but I think these lines are the best”? I don’t know if it’s right to call it the “best” but I personally like the line in the song ‘We’re Not Us’ that says “Today we are, these days we are”, in the sense of a different experience. It was because of this line that I was able to write this song. Looking back, I didn’t have any struggles with writing this song. It is a song that came out naturally at once. When I thought about how and why it came out, I couldn’t find the answer right away. It was an amazing experience. I think I will remember it for a long time. LEESEOKHOON What are your plans for this year? Like last year, I will also spend this year working hard. Like this album’s title, I will always be in the same place singing, while meeting a lot of people. In 2022 as well, please watch over me and support me. LEESEOKHOON Finally, please say something to overseas fans on Kpopmap! It feels unfamiliar to be greeting the overseas fans through this interview. It is a precious moment and I feel honored so I want to thank everyone for their love and support. I hope to see you in person someday so you can personally hear my greetings, along with my music. Please listen to my first full album “Customary Place” and its title track ‘Love Sick’ a lot. As always, thank you! LEESEOKHOON You can watch the music video for LEESEOKHOON’s ‘Love Sick’ below!
